Visit Today : Visit Yesterday : This Month : This Year : Next we look into a relatively new branch of corpus linguistics - corpus stylistics - which combines corpus linguistics and literary stylistics using corpus techniques for the analysis of literary texts.
The final part of the course deals with corpora and research design. It addresses practical and theoretical issues about how to formulate good research questions and design a successful corpus project. We will consider, for instance, what kind of questions can be answered with the help of a certain type of corpus, how much data is needed, how representative corpus data are, and how to operationalise relevant linguistic and non-linguistic variables.
An Introduction to Corpus Linguistics (Studies in Language and Linguistics)
The course will include hands-on sessions with existing corpora. Since the course aims to show how PhD students can use corpus methods working with their own data, project descriptions and data samples must be submitted in advance.
Her main research interests are in corpus linguistics and contextual approaches to meaning. She is currently Principal Investigator on the AHRC-funded project "CLiC Dickens - characterisation in the representation of speech and body language from a corpus stylistic perspective".
